Taking Care of Your Jewellery

Updated: Jan 22, 2020

Once you found the perfect jewellery, you need to know how to properly maintain it.

Be Careful with Heat or Light: Heat and light can damage colored gemstones and pearls. Other delicate material can also be damaged with extreme exposure to light.

Keep Jewelry Away from Chemicals: Exposure to chemicals can discolor and damage precious metals, including silver, gold, and platinum. Even everyday substances, such as lotion, hairspray, or other cosmetics, can damage the surface of pearls or other delicate gems. Fine jewelry should also be removed before you go swimming in a chlorinated pool or before using any household cleaners. Chlorine and bleach can damage or pit gold alloys.

Be Careful with Ultrasonic Cleaners: You can usually get a professional ultrasonic cleaner but you should be aware that not all jewelry or gems should be cleaned in it. Cleaners shouldn’t be used for gemstones that have been filled with substances, such as oil. Gems susceptible to heat and temperature changes should also not be cleaned in this type of machine.

Keep Metals Separately: Gold and silver jewellery should be kept in separate places. Gold scratches easily so it’s important to keep it stored individually.

Don’t Keep Jewelry on 24/7: You should give some of your pieces a break and give some love to other pieces of jewelry.

Wipe It: At the end of your day, wipe the jewelry using an anti-tarnish cloth before you store it away. This gets rid of any lingering dust, oils, or moisture.

Don’t Use Toothpaste: This is a home remedy that is often recommended but it can be too abrasive and damage jewelry in the long run.

Not only is it necessary to properly clean essential jewellery but you also need to store it. Jewelry shouldn’t be tossed in a drawer or left on top of a dresser. Many jewelry pieces come in a pouch or box, which is a safe place to store them. Sterling silver should be kept in an anti-tarnish cloth or bag. Jewelry boxes with individually padded slots can be a good choice. Please subscribe to our blog for more interesting articles.
